Hot Breakfast! The Big Reveal Album Cover Art Extravaganza
Behind the artwork featuring:
The best clients are the ones who challenge us to stretch and learn. Having worked with Hot Breakfast! on their last album cover design, I was excited to see where they intended to go with their recent release (out as of last week), The Big Reveal. The title was already intriguing, and it was about to get more so. They shared with me that the cover was going to be mixed media, that they had consigned an illustration by Nathan Hardoin that portrayed a colorful and wacky street scene, and I needed to figure out a way to put them in it. We only had Matt Casarino’s (the dude half of Hot Breakfast!) rough sketch to work with.
Armed only with an assistant, a ladder, three strobes and a dork rock power duo, we shot early one morning on a small street in Arden, DE that I guess we took over illegally. The key was to get the right angle, and we were aware that Nathan would be using Matt’s sketch as a template. We shot for an hour or so, lighting with off-camera strobes and mixing styles and poses, as well as getting some alternate shots for promo and inside artwork.
Alas, Nathan’s illustration arrived and was amazing, and we had a few images that fit perfectly. Everything was cobbled together in Photoshop, lines were added and in some cases hand-drawn to match Nathan’s work. An illustrated hand was moved from one section to another and, in the end, we purposely made the band a little larger than life. It turned out like nothing we’ve done before, and Hot Breakfast! loved it.
